Are Proms and Weddings Similar?

By: Sofia Blum

Some say that weddings and proms are similar, but are they really? Of course in both a wedding and a prom, you have to worry about the dress, the tux, the photographer, limo, and venue, but how much similar is a prom to a wedding? Back in the day, when your parents were teenagers, yes they too were once your age, as hard as it is to believe, going to prom didn't require so much work, money, or planning. Kids back then were satisfied with wearing hand me downs from siblings, and getting permission to drive their dads car to prom. Boys were excited to get an extra five bucks so that they can take their dates out for soda pop and a burger after the prom. Back then there was no such thing as an after prom, where partying all night long into the wee hours of the night is now considered the norm. Today, proms are more extravagant and each year more over the top than last. So ask yourself are proms starting to resemble weddings?

Planning a wedding, as all of us know can be very stressful. Not only must you think about yourself, the groom, and each of your families, but you also have to think about your guests. Where will you place the guests, which table do you place Aunt Marg, because you don't want Uncle Jimmy getting into a fight with Uncle David. Seat placement at weddings is crucial for a smooth celebration, just like a wedding, a prom is already set up for you. Faculty sits for hours placing people with friends, so that your prom celebration is a fun and memorable one. The couple, group, or person pretty much only has to arrive and not think about anything else, since the school takes care of seating arrangements, food, the band, and the party favors.

To all the parents out there, that are going bankrupt purchasing all the odds and ends that a prom requires, just think you don't have to worry about the real deal, planning a wedding, until far down the road. If you think expenses due to prom are bad, then start saving up early, because a wedding can put you tens and thousands of dollars in debt.

It is true that proms are compared to weddings from a female's perspective. Most females wait, and anticipate for their prom years before they actually attend it. For a girl attending her prom, everything has to be perfect, just like a fairy tale. Every little detail from the color of her dress to what color her dates tie and shirt will be is planned well in advance, and is given much thought. These types of scenarios are identical to a wedding. The bride takes months and in many cases years to prepare for her big day by shopping around for the best prices for her wedding day. A young girl's prom is equivalent to a wedding, because she views her prom as the most important day of her adolescent life, and plans for her prom months and years in advance as well. Now let's discuss the prom and wedding from a boy's perspective. Is a prom and wedding similar in a mans life, as it is in a females life? Men don't prepare years in advance for either occasion, they pretty much sit back and let the girl do all the planning for both the prom and the wedding. Sure men have some input of what goes on, for example, the men shed out the money for each big event, but unlike girls, a wedding and a prom in a mans life isn't as significant as the actual event itself. Men don't like to plan for long periods of time, there more goal oriented. Instead of concentrating on whether his shoes or tie match hers, men just want to get the tedious process of booking and planning for the event, out of the way, so that they can just have a great time at there occasion whether it be a prom or their wedding.

There is a difference on how men and woman perceive things, while men are more goal oriented, woman are more detail oriented. With this said, proms and weddings are viewed differently between men and women. For a woman, and her parents, a prom definitely resembles a mini wedding, but for a guy it doesn't. For a guy, a prom is just another event, which he has to come up with some extra cash to please his date and hope to get lucky at the end of his night.

Another contrast between a prom and a wedding is the honeymoon. Even though many prom goers don't book tickets to Hawaii or Tahiti afterwards, many go that extra mile in purchasing vacations homes, Disney trips, or even rent yachts and boats for their after prom in order to continue their night in fun. Ok so "after prom" isn't called a honeymoon, but let's get real here, it sounds like one to me. Not only is the after prom activity costly, but that too is well planned out way into the future.

In conclusion, you decide on your own if proms and weddings are similar, just because each has their own individual name, doesn't mean they don't share a resemblance to one another. Illustrated below are the similarities of each.

After carefully reviewing each side, you be the judge and ask yourself are proms nowadays getting out of hand? Are proms in this day of age looking and costing more like extravagant mini weddings? By viewing the similarities it is obviously visible that prom goers are taking their senior year celebration way too seriously, which is costing their parents and dates a large sum of money. Sometimes big things come in small packages and who said simple isn't always better?
