Sculpt Your Face into a Masterpiece

By: Sofia Blum

Everyone is well aware that high school prom is the most important event of a young adolescent teen's life. Pictures will be taken and kept forever from this joyous and momentous occasion of your high school years. These will be the memories you will talk and think about your whole life. Some will look bake at these pictures and remember how beautiful they were, others will not want to think back to their high school prom, because it brought them back bad recollections. Memories from prom should not be causing you grief. You should feel and look your most beautiful and here are some tips to make your prom experience and appearance an unforgettable one. The first tip almost all girls ignore is spending a fortune on their dress and not a dime on their face! No we are not talking about plastic surgery here, were discussing all the treatments and products to make your face shine, glow, look and feel healthy. Your facial look will be remembered just as much as your dress. If this is your first experience with makeup, don't panic. Give yourself plenty of time to practice.

You've got your dress, right? Great! Now, start thinking about your complexion. If you start to break out a little, see an esthetician or make an appointment with a certified dermatologist. Do whatever you can to help your problem skin before beginning with any of the tips mentioned below.

Tip 1: Here are some essential components in finding a really good foundation. Today's foundations found in any makeup store or pharmacy like Mac, Rite Aid, or Duane Reade, have enough pigment and consistency to provide excellent coverage. But be careful if your foundation doesn't cover you in one application, toss it, and select one that works with the actual color of your skin. It does not need to be the exact same color. Today's foundations are pretty universal. Just find one that gives a radiant, healthy glow, and not one that is flat or chalky. After all, foundation is the single most important cosmetic that goes on your face.

When workings with foundation make sure you apply it to all problem areas that need to receive special attention, for example dark circles under the eyes. Foundation has the proper consistency to hide dark circles, but if for some reason your dark circles are still visible, choose a foundation that is one shade lighter than the one you are using, that should do the trick! Remember putting on makeup needs some time to get used to, not everyone can look perfect the first time they wear it, so keep in mind that if the foundation is too light, it can draw attention to the area you want to cover up. Practice makes perfect and any areas that are not your best features can also be "corrected."

Tip 2: The next step in prepping your face for prom is obtaining long, glamorous, and ultra-feminine eyelashes. Boy's love to look into a girls face and see long thick and luscious eye lashes. Sometimes, an overdone application of mascara can weigh lashes down, giving a heavy, clumpy appearance, but here is a tip for not over doing your eyes. Eye shadow should be worn light and shimmering. Cover the entire top lid lightly for an even coat. If you feel the need for a little contrast, add a complementary darker shadow in the crease of the lid. Be careful when using eye liner. If you want to have a smoky effect wear eyeliner on the top lid, and put nude or white eyeliner on the inside of your eye, not the lower eye, but on the inside of your eyelid. This will create a pop out effect, where your eyes will look big and full. Don't go over board with dark eyeliners because black circles melting under the eyes were so '80s. You want a polished, classic look.

TIP 3: For the prom, a professional hair salon, since trained professionals can almost always do a better job, is recommended. Just remember to make an appointment, since many salons don't take "walk-ins." But if you want to save some money, blowing out your hair, or parting it to the far left or right side is a classic elegant look that never goes out of style. Also clips and a nice hair band will be a perfect finish to your perfect complexion.

EXTRA TIPS & HINTS:

Sculpting Cheekbones: Start out by applying the blush to the hollow parts of your cheeks. Select a light-brown shade and dab. On the apple of the cheek, use a neutral shade and on the cheekbone itself, select the color of your choice. Make sure you blend, blend, blend, blend, or you will have a blush disaster. Ever notice how good people look when they have been under the sun for a long time? The sun strikes protruding areas of the face first, turning them a rosy pink. I recommend using makeup in the same naturally artistic way. It is much safer than exposure to the sun.

Plumping Lips: Using a lip pencil (not too dark), draw just outside your natural lip line. Then, fill in with the lipstick color of your choice all the way to the lip's edge. Lastly, apply a shimmer to each lip, top and bottom.

Removing Premature Signs of Aging: No matter what age you are premature aging can happen to you. Even very young people will get crow's feet, brow burrows, laugh lines, forehead lines, and lip lines. Lip lines are the very worst. They cause the lipstick or lip gloss to run and bleed. The solution to this problem is to always use a good lip liner which is essential. Moisturize your face daily, and stay away from the sun and fake baking. Everyone loves a natural glow and shine to their skin, but nowadays there are spray on tans, and tans in a bottle that will give you the same affect, without the harm of ultra violet rays.

Hiding Freckles: If you have freckles, forget about covering them with concealer. You will only look like you're wearing a mask! Use a light foundation with golden overtones. Blend well to give your skin a more uniform look.

Hiding Scars: If you have scars, don't cover them with a light concealer! Scars tend to have shiny surfaces to them. The idea is to reduce the shine in the area. You cannot fill in scars with makeup; it will look very packed and possibly become even more noticeable. Instead, use a foundation with excellent coverage, then powder with a matte powder.

Hiding Birthmarks: If the birthmark is pink or purple in color, use a green concealer to cover, and then apply foundation. If the birthmark is brownish, try to lighten it with a concealer that has pinkish tones. Always use powder afterwards.

Well now that you're all ready and set to attend prom, with makeup in tact, all blemishes covered up, and a pearly white smile, taking pictures shouldn't be so bad at all. Instead with the new and improved you, smiling at that camera shouldn't be painful, but instead should be a memorable experience that you could look back on and say, " Damn I looked good!"
