How to Make Sure You Don't Wear the Same Prom Dress as Someone Else

By: Sofia Blum

Prom is the mother load of all dress up parties, and for many seniors, especially girls, it is considered the biggest event of their lives, other than graduation of course. If a girl loves to dress up and be girly, prom night is that one special night to be the one and only special girl. Girls look forward to this day months and at many times years in advance, they imagine this night to be perfect, considering the fact that they planned for it for so long. Can you imagine walking through those prom doors and your worst nightmare comes true.Seeing another girl wearing the exact same dress that you have on at prom!

You are probably thinking, "That's it my night is completely over, how could she buy the same dress as me," but remember she's probably thinking the thing you are. So don't worry, think fast, and remember all the tips that this article provides, and you will be able to have a good time, laugh about this memory years down the road, and still have a dress that everyone will ask you where you got it from.

First let's begin by helping you prevent this dreadful situation from ever occurring. To avoid this, a good place to look for a one of a kind dress is at a vintage shop. You will be amazed by how many people don't shop at vintage shops, which is a plus for you, because you are almost guaranteed a number of decent quality dresses for an affordable price without looking like someone's clone on prom night. Many vintage stores carry dresses (as well as shoes and accessories) by popular brand names, so you can wear designer, one of a kind dresses for a fraction of the price. And because they are inexpensive, more money can be spent on matching shoes, jewelry, and handbags.

One thing to look out for is shopping at stores or boutiques you know other girls your age will shop at. Yes they might have cute dresses for a really great price, but it will save you a lot of stress, and, "Oh my God, she's wearing my dress," in the long run. So stay away from popular stores, such as Forever 21, Macy's, and Saks.

For those of you who don't have a spending limit on mommy and daddy's credit cards, shopping at boutiques such as Betsey Johnson, Prada, and Gucci, where expensive unique dresses lay perfectly on silk and gold coated hangers is a big no no as well. What, you think just because your rich no one else will have a fabulous dress like yours? Reality check, there are other rich people in this world that think just like you do, so make sure you buy your dress in a store that doesn't appeal to everyone.

The key here is to go to a smaller store, rather than a retail store or a huge well known boutique, since smaller franchises do not make many of the same dresses (as they are in limited quantity), there is less of a chance that more than one person will have the same dress. Plus, small designer boutiques carry dresses that are unique so they will be sure to stand out, if not catch many people's attention. In addition, because the dress is costly and made of good quality you will not only look, but will feel beautiful in it, and the dress will be memorable to yourself as well as others.

Ok so you bought your dress, you feel confident that no one is wearing the same gown you just picked out, but accidents do happen. If for some weird reason god is punishing you and another girl walks into prom wearing your dress here is what you do. Don't panic, this rule is crucial, you want to look and stay cool, calm, and like you have everything under control, and yes after reading this you are sure to have everything under control. Before you even get to prom, pack another dress just in case you spill, rip, or have a mini you look alike at prom. If someone is wearing your dress, just excuse yourself to the bathroom and slip into your back up dress. If for some reason you can't afford, or forgot your back up dress at home, take these essential things with you to prom to accessories the dress you already have on. Bring a belt. Belts are in style now, whether it is a simple black, silver, gold, or any other metallic color, huge chunky belts will accessories any outfit. Just wear it around the higher end of your waist and you look nothing like the girl that just walked in with your dress. If that doesn't work for you, accessories with a necklace, or bring a scarf, what these do is it captures the eye and makes it look towards what is going on around the dress, and allows everyone not to focus on the dress itself.

Another accessory you can use is a light summer cardigan. Not only will it keep you warm with the air conditioner turned up on high, but now many stores custom make them to go along with the dress. A great suggestion is asking the store to make you a sheer, or see-through cardigan. It should match your dress color, or if you want to stand out make it a color that will accentuate your dress so that it will look like a completely new dress when you have it on. These cardigans can be in any style, three quarter length, short sleeves, or long, the whole point is to put it on and feel comfortable with it on. You can even add sequins, beads, or pearls, to it so it emphasizes your personality. The great part in having one is that you get to wear it again and again, and if it really is hot during prom with all the dancing you will be doing, it is so light, it will feel like apart of your body due to its sheer material. Prom dress shopping should be an experience you feel comfortable with, and the dress should fit your personality. Whether you go for an expensive designer dress from a boutique, a unique find at a vintage store, or even a conservative dress found anywhere else, it is all about what makes you look and feel beautiful.

So in the end, while your clone is panicking on what she should do with her dress, you have gotten it all under control and can keep partying, I mean it is the most important night of your life, why would you let something so minor upset you (Wink Wink).
