Get the Parents on Your Side

By: Lori Kremen

Your parents love you whether or not they tell you so. When you feel as though your parents are restricting every aspect of your life, usually, they are just trying to protect you from the mistakes they made at your age. Trying to explain to your parents that you have to make your own mistakes probably won't work because they are clouded by their parental urge to protect you. This is where the controversy comes into play. The prom is the one night you want to be free of parental control, yet your mom and dad seem hell bent on restricting your fun as much as possible. Is there a way to get your parents off your back? Well, no. But you might be able to set their swollen hearts at ease.

Talk to your parents honestly. It can be hard to initiate a conversation with your parents, but trust me it is worth the effort. Parents have natural lie detectors imbedded in their biology. Have you ever noticed that parents are usually less angry about rule breaking and angrier about the web of lies you told in order to break the rules? Let them know exactly what your plans are for prom night. Well, at least let Mom and Dad know the locations of each event.

Introduce your parents to your date as early as possible. Make sure you tell your date to be on his best behavior. Really allow your parents a chance to get to know your date. Use the "getting to know you" period to set your parents at ease and let them know your date is a gentleman/lady. Once they know your date is trustworthy, they will probably ease up a little. If possible, give your parents your date's phone number, just in case there is some sort of emergency.

Try to take some burden of the prom costs on by yourself. Paying for some of the prom costs may require you to take on an after school job, but that will convince your parents that you are responsible. If you have to have financial help from your parents, try to do extra chores to earn the money. Until the prom, try to keep your grades up. Make your parents feel like you have earned a night of freedom.

This is the age of cellular phones. Volunteer to call your parents once from the prom and once after the prom, so that they know you are going to be safe on your special night. Whatever you do, keep your promise. Your parents will be happy that you want to keep them in the loop.

Finally, when the night of the prom arrives, allow your parent to take as many pictures of you as they want. Seriously, let them get their fill. Don't allow yourself to be ashamed of your parents over sentimentality. Remember your parents are proud of you and your accomplishments to come.
